Does anyone know the torque settings for the cylinder head?
And is blue hylomar still the goo of choice?

I Just looked in 'The Morgan Four Wheeler Workshop Manual' +4, 4/4 Series 1 & 4/4 Series II, that was compiled and written by John Dowdeswell and unfortunately there is nothing listed torque setting wise for your engine!
Then I looked in The Autobooks Morgan Four Owners Workshop Manual Autobook 796 By R Clarke, and it only lists torque settings for Series II onwards!
It might be worth contacting the Standard Motor Club.

I have used blue hylomar on solid copper head gaskets without any problems, but would suggest that you use the spray can version, that way you get a nice even coating which helps it to all clamp down evenly.
I have used one other make but the name escapes me at present

thanks. I have done it in the past but my brain is fading - would 40ftlbs ring a bell?
the trouble is that it is a standard engine but with a special "morgan only" OHV head

Was it Wellseal?
That's what we use - it's supposed to be the dogs do dahs!
I will ask John Clarke if he knows the head torque settings. He is in contact with a guy who specialises in them. (But probably not with the Morgan head!)

I tracked down Roger Comber - he of the ex-works short-chassis standard special BWP 47.
40 ft lbs if one's studs and nuts are good enough.
wellseal preferred.
his engine revs to 5K rpm! ooer!

I've used 42-46 ft lbs for the head nuts on mine. I too could not find any figures for the SS engine so resorted to my Triumph Herald manual. The SS engine is the predecessor to the TH engine and so I used the TH figures. I used to use the spray Hylomar on my X-flow head gaskets but have not had the head off for some years now and the can was empty. I have been using Stag Wellseal jointing compound on the SS head gaskets. I've had a few problems with the head and am now on to the 3rd engine rebuild in 3 months and still using the same gasket I started with! The compound cleans off nicely with Stick Stuff Remover. Engine removal/stripping down/cleaning/rebuilding/replacement is starting to become second nature to me now. I've only managed to do 100 miles since completeing the rebuild and would like to do more. I'm sure the head problem will be overcome soon. Hope this helps.

I was up there last Sunday (NCM meeting) and I'm not taking any blame for a hole in the new head which I've had to get fixed again. Have to go back and use the original head I think. That only had a crack in the top surface.
