Autosport quiz?

As there are a three weeks before the next race at Oulton I thought someone (Bob?) would like a brain teaser to while away those gin and tonic moments enjoying our belated summer... :)

In this week's Autosport, perhaps without realising it, they set a very interesting quiz when they stated on page 39 that the late, great Chris Amon was one of just “nine drivers who had led, finished on the podium and has a pole position in Formula 1”. That set me puzzling about who those nine were.

I believe there are actually 10... answers on a postcard please! :?:

I do not understand the question. Are they proposing that only nine drivers have ever lead a GP finished on the podium, and taken a pole position, or is this all meant to have happened in a single race?

Confused of Luton.

Simon even a brief search throws up 17 drivesr who have started form pole, lead at some stage, finished on the podium and made fastest lap all in the same race. What am I not understanding here?

But - like Chris Amon - we are looking for people who never actually won a championship grand prix. So the people you are looking for are those who have led a race, had a pole position and finished on a podium. .. Does that help?

So we are looking for a bunch of losers then?

As someone who keeps finishing second behind Tim Parsons, "Losers" sounds a bit harsh! But yes, you are looking for drivers who have finished second or third. .. who have in their careers notched up at least one pole position and have also led a race. Chris Amon was the most notable example but there are some other well known names as well..

Sorry, but as a race winner you do not qualify Leigh.

As no answers have been forthcoming :( , maybe if I give you the names of two more drivers who have been on pole, led a race and been on a podium - but have never actually won a race... one from the recent past is Nick Heidfeld and one from a more dim and distant would be Stuart Lewis Evans. Does that prompt any further suggestions? :?:

Leigh, your membership of this august club was suspended pending your resumption of a proper 3.5 engine! [-X

Simon - your quest for such obscure trivia is commendable but baffling.... :-k

"Commendable but baffling"... sounds like the sort of fitting sobriquet my wife could use when referring to my on-track efforts!!!

The following might be regarded as under achievers. Heidfeld, Jarier, Giacomelli, De Cesaris, Parkes, Revson, and Pryce.

Not sure if they entirely fit your rules but how about Derek Warwick, a Frenchman called Behra, and Martin Brundle (who I recall raced against us at the Willhire 24 hours in early 80s) :O:

Info is from

This is so exciting... answers flooding in !!!

Bob - with Amon, Heidfeld and Lewis Evans already given away by your "commendable but baffling" quizmaster, you have scored 3 + 5 = 8. =D>
Jarier, Giacomelli, De Cesaris, Parkes, Pryce - all correct, but Revson won both the British and canadian GPs in 1973... [-X
So, who was the other "under achiever"? Or, in my opinion, the other two "under achievers"??? :?:

Leigh - close but no cigar I am afraid... =D> just the sort of people we are looking for but none of those ever qualified on pole...

Any other offers for the final one - or two? 8-[
