Fordwater Trophy

Great work in Qualifying today (Friday) by Adrian van der Kroft and Keith Ahlers.

Keith is on Pole & Adrian is alongside him 2nd fastest - Terrific I can't wait to see the Grid form up tomorrow for the race proper.

The TR-based SLR is also in the race but somewhat further back as is Striling Moss.

Morgan SLR 1 - 2 at Goodwood

Keith Ahlers won the Fordwater Trophy at the Goodwood Revival Meeting this morning followed home by Adrian van der Kroft in 2nd.

Congratulations and Well Done to both Teams.

It was just wonderful to see the SLRs at Goodwood today, they are fantastic looking motor cars, the weather was horrible – but the driving was heroic !

Keith Ahlers was in the ex-Chris Lawrence/Tony Howard car having it’s first outing resplendent in its TOK-green livery (following a two-year restoration by Brett Syndercombe and Rick Bourne at Brands Hatch Morgans).


Adrian van der Kroft was in his sleek looking polished aluminium SLR (the history of which I’m afraid I don’t know) prepared by Brian Gateson at Techniques.


The third SLR was the singleton Triumph-chassis car driven (and owned ?) by Tony Griffin in dark blue and with an appropriate ‘SAH’ number plate.

For the race I can do no better than quote the Goodwood website http://www.goodwood.co.uk/revival/ :-

“Michele Tommasi in his Italian-liveried Ashley Sprite GT provided the drive of the Revival so far in the Fordwater Trophy. But his long battle with Keith Ahler’s beautiful Morgan Plus 4 SLR ended with Tommasi in the gravel trap, and gifted victory to Ahlers.

Tommasi and Ahlers swapped the lead constantly during the race, with Tommasi employing some dramatic late-braking manoeuvres to nick the lead, before his over-enthusiasm resulted in a huge slide over the grass and a ten-second deficit.

He stormed back into contention before taking the lead again, losing it and then beaching the Sprite after a hopelessly over-optimistic late-braking attack on Ahler’s lead in wet conditions and on narrow tyres.

What else happened ? We all got very wet but there were some very cose races. I had a good view of a screen. Congrats to Keith who really kept cool when the Sprite was all over him. It spun once and lost 20 seconds and then made that up (when Keith was held by a back marker) in 3 laps and Sprite really should have won but seemed keener to entertain the crowd by climbing all over Keith at every corner.

I thought 17 and 7 are reserved for those who drive to the circuit and want to economise and make their race numbers out of sticky tape. Mary – you should support the Triumph SLR – that had a tax disc.

Sunday started wet with good pre war race including a race long battle between the Napier Bentley and the 3 wheeler Mogs of Gary Caroline and Sue Darbyshire. 95 year old Tom Delaney did not start – the reason given by the commentator was that he had died on Friday ! The moral of that is – if you want to race at Goodwood try to get an entry at a slightly younger age.

The afternoon brightened but was very windy. There was a tribute to the late Ray Hanna and a Spitfire taxied along the main straight. Then Mog racers included Grahame Bryant (in MG Magnette and Cobra) and Dion Kremer in Elva (which I missed ).

Sounds like a great weekend. Thanks for the reports and congrats to Keith and Adrian for the 1-2.

Most of that is correct Leigh except that I use re-usable race numbers rather then sticky tape which I think is Jack's preference.

Mary – you should support the Triumph SLR – that had a tax disc.

Was the tax disc current Leigh and, more importantly, had the car been driven to the circuit?

Serena give me number 71 as 7 and 17 had been taken and 1 has to be won. You try making 88 out of tank tape! Mary and Jack like their cars to be taxed as theirs are tax exempt. Congratulations to Keith and Adrian.

A Date for your Diary

The Goodwood Revival will be televised both in the UK and on the Speed Channel in the USA. The date for the Revival to be shown in the UK on ITV1 has now been confirmed as Tuesday, October 24 at 2300hrs. Speed Channel timing will follow at a later date.
